Raymond Terrell “Terry” Foor, Sr. of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2017 after an extended illness. He was born November 11, 1919 in Galesburg, Illinois to Percy Allen “P. A.” and Sallie Lee (Miles) Foor.
Terry graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1937 and attended college at the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a B. S. in Petroleum Engineering in 1942. He was a member of ROTC, Phi Eta Sigma, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Tau honor societies and Sigma Nu social fraternity. He also served as feature editor of the first issue of the College of Engineering’s Shamrock magazine. At OU he met his future wife, Mary Lee Lyon. They married January 25, 1942 and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this year.
After graduation, Terry served as a U.S. Army Captain in an ordnance company in the WWII European Theatre. He returned from service in 1946 and formed Foor Engineering Company with his father, specializing in the design and construction of oil and gas facilities. He retired from the company in 1979 and worked in commercial real estate for another 20 years.
Terry loved watching all sports, especially the OU Sooners. He was an accomplished golfer and travelled many times to England, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as across the U.S. to play courses with Mary Lee and friends. He learned to fly and owned his own aircraft, logging over 5000 hours, and was often accompanied by business associates, family, and friends. He was a voracious reader and loved building. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Norman, leading fundraising efforts and supervising construction of the Family Life Center. In addition, he was a founding member of the Oklahoma City Petroleum Club and the University of Oklahoma Associates.
Terry is survived by: his wife, Mary Lee; five children: Diane Knapp, Cindy Foor and partner Kerry Mulholland, Ramey Foor and wife Laurie, Tracy Foor and wife Trish, and Ginger Murray; nine grandchildren: Trey Wheeler and wife Lauren, Clark Wheeler and wife Carolyn, Grant Wheeler, Terry Foor, Kevin Foor, Jeremy Foor, Gordon Foor and wife Taylor, Patrick Murray, and Katie Murray; three great-grandchildren: Elaine, Cale, and Lee Wheeler; and nephews Mike Atha and wife Lois and Steve Atha and wife Sherry.
Terry was preceded in death by: mother, Sallie Foor; father and step-mother, P.A. and Mavin Foor; brother, Kenneth Foor; sister and brother-in-law, Neoma and Robert Bridges; sister and brother-in-law, Yolanda and Woody Atha; niece, Jan Atha; and son-in-law, David Knapp.
