Obreeta "Von" (Speer) Adair

October 6, 1919 — June 1, 2017

Obreeta Von Speer Adair was born on October 6, 1919 in Pryor, Mayes County, Oklahoma, to Emmett D. Speer and Loreedia Youree Speer. She passed away on June 1, 2017 at the age of 97.

One year after her birth, the family moved to Wirt, (Ragtown) Oklahoma. There Von graduated from Dundee School in 1936. She then moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma where she attended Ardmore Business College, then worked for the H.M Carter Insurance Agency until marrying James R. Adair on May 30, 1940. James and Von then moved to Norman where James and his step father Lee M. Biggs were building homes. James entered the Army in 1943 and was stationed in Mineral Wells, Texas where Von joined him working at the Baker Hotel as Secretary to the Manager. She then took a job in the Army Base Finance Department. When the base closed and James was discharged in 1946, she transferred to the South Navy Base where she paid the sailors travel pay as they were discharged. They moved back to Norman where James continued in the home building business, incorporating as Biggs and Son, and Von kept the books until 1952 when their son James L. Adair was born. At that time, she stayed home to raise him and they often enjoyed traveling on family motor home trips across the country.

Von was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Norman for over 70 years; she was an active volunteer in her community. She had a green thumb and her home and back porch were always filled with plants. She collected antiques, enjoyed needlepoint, was an avid reader and involved in sewing club and book club.

She is survived by her son, Jim and wife Renee; two grandchildren, Zach Adair and wife Sophia, and Ashley Adair-Garner and husband Jared; three great -grandsons, Hayden Garner and Alexander and Benjamin Adair; one great-granddaughter, Hadley Garner all of Norman.

Von was preceded in death by her husband James; and by her parents, Emmett and Loreedia Speer; daughter Beverly “Kay” Adair.
