Nadine (Bettes) Murphy of Norman was born July 1, 1922 in Lexington, Oklahoma to Walter Mixon and Virginia (Ford) Bettes. She passed in the early morning hours of Monday, February 27, 2017 at the age of 94.
Nadine grew up in Lexington/Noble area but had many friends in the Purcell/Washington area, and it was there that she met the love of her life, Elmer Murphy. The two were married in Purcell on July 15, 1939, and they enjoyed almost 30 years of wedded bliss, until Elmer passed just 12 days shy of their anniversary. Nadine and Elmer loved to travel, a passion Nadine continued after his passing with her church and various groups.
In 1954 Nadine and Elmer moved to Norman, where they made their family home. Nadine went to work at the TG&Y as a clerk, and was known to all the local kids as the “Candy Counter Lady”. Nadine was a talented seamstress, and she was famous for her fabric collection which came to take over an entire closet. Nadine also loved animals, especially dogs, and working in the yard.
Nadine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, many brothers and sisters, and a grandson-in-law, Steve Pierce. She is survived by: daughters Shirley Waddle and her husband Keith and Janet Murphy, both of Norman; granddaughters Michele Pierce and Kristy Waddle; great-grandchildren Madison and Spencer Pierce and Mia and Jackson Waddle.
