Mary Lou Peltier (Kirk)

Mary Lou went home to be reunited with her husband Richard Peltier on June 28, 2021. Born February 1, 1937 in Norman, Oklahoma to Clyde and Marie Kirk. She was a graduate of Norman High School and Oklahoma University, where she received her Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication.

She married her husband Richard on November 18, 1955 in Norman, Oklahoma. She loved music, flying, books, interior and landscape design, gardening and spoiling her grandchildren. You could often find her listening to her favorite programs on KGOU, for which she was an avid supporter. She was passionate about nature, climate change and politics for which many a lively conversation was had.

Fondest memories from her daughter Nicole: She was smart, witty and loved to learn. She had a propensity to discover multisyllabic words and use them in daily conversation from time to time. Her trusty dictionary was never too far away. As a mother she was supportive, encouraging and loving. She was always there when I had a bad day and needed a shoulder to cry on. Also, whenever I needed extra encouragement or to celebrate an accomplishment, she was my biggest cheerleader. One of my fondest memories with her was when we went on a road-trip to go visit relatives. We listened to classical music the whole way there. One of our favorites was “Fanfare for the Common Man” composed by Aaron Copland. From that point on, I developed a great appreciation for classical music all because of her. I will always miss her; she was the best mother a daughter could have had.

Favorite memories from her daughter Mignonne: Mom loved family vacations and had very fond memories of them, as we all do. She was a devoted grandmother and retired right before her first grandchild, allowing her to enjoy them full-time. She was the best potty trainer of all time! She always worried about her children and grandchildren and wanted the best for them all. She was quick to correct our grammar and spelling mistakes and loved using new words to describe things. She was a beautiful and genuine woman!

Best memories from her daughter Annette: Mom was an expert vacation planner; we often took month long road-trips in the car or flew to visit family in the single engine Musketeer piloted by mom and dad. We visited many of the National Parks and I have fond memories of sleeping in the pop-up camper and freezing while being serenaded by cows. She was a wonderful woman who was always my best editor, I will miss her dearly. Consequently, any grammar or spelling errors in this obituary are not my fault!

We walked the path of this life,

Joined as one, Husband and Wife,
Until we had to part.

Now my darling, I close my eyes,
and imagine your smiling face,
as my spirit flies toward the skies,
and I am reunited with you in grace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters; Sally Kirk, Martha McMakin and husband Jim.

Mary Lou is survived by her daughters; Annette Peltier of Redondo Beach, CA, Mignonne Jarman and husband Thomas, Nicole Chancellor and husband Kurtis of Norman, grandchildren; Richard, Colt and Jonathan. She is also survived by her sister; Clydette Hastings and husband Carl of Norman as well as many nephews, nieces and friends.
