Lula Fay (Morris) Mckenzie

Lula Fay (Morris) McKenzie was born October 15, 1941 in Stratford, Oklahoma to Virgil S. Morris and Lillie Beatrice (Holman) Morris. She passed away at her home on June 23, 2018 after a lengthy illness, with her daughter and her husband at her bedside.

Lula was the youngest of six children and the only daughter. Her early grade school years were spent at the one-room McGee Country Schoolhouse built by the WPA and located north of Stratford.

Lula’s family moved to Norman in 1950 and she graduated from Norman High School in 1959. She studied business at the University of Oklahoma and worked at the Cleveland County Treasurer's office.

On February 4, 1961, she was united in marriage with James C. McKenzie and they made their home in Norman until moving to Heidelberg, Germany for two years with her husband's Military Service. She worked as a Clerk-Stenographer at USAREUR Headquarters in Heidelberg. Their son, John Charles, was born in Heidelberg in 1963.

After Military Service they moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1963 and her husband worked there for four years. Their daughter, Kathleen Denise, was born in 1966. The family moved back to Norman in 1967 and has resided in Norman since. Lula returned to her work at the County Treasurer's Office and later became a Deputy at the County Election Board, continuing to work there until her retirement. She worked faithfully in Christian work and benevolence to assist her husband as a Deacon and an Elder for over thirty years. She was a Charter Member of the Alameda Church of Christ and has also attended the Westside Church of Christ. She was a devout Christian who loved God, her family, and helped others in need. Lula (Lu) loved to garden, growing beautiful flowers and vegetables. We all enjoyed the fruits of her labor in the kitchen. She enjoyed travel and was known to collect a few antique purses along the way. She appreciated and collected antiques and loved telling stories of life on the farm and working in the cotton and peanut fields. She also enjoyed going to the Annual Morris Reunion and getting some peaches at Stratford. But she mostly just enjoyed being at home, surrounded by her family and friends as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was dearly loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Survivors include: her husband, Dr. James McKenzie of the home, one son, John McKenzie and wife Mikyong of El Dorado Hills, California, and one daughter, Kathleen (McKenzie) Stone and husband Andy of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four grandsons: John McKenzie of Austin, Texas, James L. McKenzie of El Dorado Hills, California, Andrew Stone and wife Kaylie of Tulsa, and Hardy Stone of Albuquerque; four granddaughters: Ashley (McKenzie) Berkenhoff and husband Jim of San Antonio, Michelle McKenzie of El Dorado Hills, Courtney Stone of Brooklyn, New York, and Madeleine Stone of Albuquerque; two great-grandsons: Henry and Hunter Berkenhoff of San Antonio; three brothers: Bayless Morris of Norman, Jimmie Morris and wife Bettie of Seattle, Washington, and Clifton D. Morris of Miami, Florida; and a number of beloved cousins, nephews, and nieces. In addition, Lula was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Paul J. Morris and Charlie Lee Morris, an infant.
