June Mays

June Mays of Norman was born on June 4, 1931 in McCamey, Texas to Doris Rufus and Helen Bernice (Cox) Gasaway. She passed at the age of 85 on Wednesday, March 1, 2017.
June was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by: daughter Karen Streight of Norman; son Winston Mays and wife Sandy of Norman; daughter Robin Benoit and husband Brian of Norman; brother Steve Gasaway and wife Frances of Bay City, TX; grandchildren Ashley Murphy and husband Mike, Ryan Streight and wife Lara, Aly Simon and husband Ryan, Zach Mays, Kelsey Mays, Annelise Benoit, and Jillian Benoit; great-grandchildren Aubrey, Max, and Natalie Streight and Riley Simon; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The two things June loved most in life were God and family. She put them first every day. June grew up in Texas surrounded by her parents, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Upon moving to Oklahoma in 1968 with her husband and children, her vacations were spent mostly traveling to see family. Family reunions were very important to her and she loved gathering for all holidays and special occasions. June’s love extended to her friends, many of whom she considered a part of her family. She enjoyed gardening, playing golf and bridge, and volunteered her time with many organizations, including serving weekly as a Pink Lady at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She was active in every church she attended, especially McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, bible study leader, and was an active member of Bonus Years. June attended the Texas State College for Women and pursued a long career as an administrative assistant. Throughout her career, she worked for Phillips Petroleum Company, the FAA, Compaq Computer Corporation, and the University of Oklahoma. June was proud of her work and loved by her co-workers. Wherever she went, she brought with her a beautiful smile, a twinkle in her eye, and a determination to make a difference. June had an amazing sense of humor and was truly the most special woman. Any guest in her home would immediately feel welcome and know her favorite color was blue. She loved her family very much and often said to her children, grandchildren and many she encountered, “I started all of this.” She leaves a very grateful, close, loving family to continue her legacy.
