John Lee Roy Porter

December 6, 1934 — April 30, 2019

John Lee Roy Porter of Norman left this earth on April 30, 2019 to join his forever sweetheart, Nola June Porter, who preceded him in death in October of 2017. He was born to J. Lee and Dorothy LaVerne (Gordon) Porter on December 6, 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

John grew up in Guthrie and participated in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout with the Order of the Arrow. Right after high school, John enlisted in the United States Army; his military service gave him many stories to share over the years. John’s service accolades were many, but the one that stands out and which he was most proud of was the honor of being asked to place the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. John retired from the Army as a Colonel.

Though John was committed to the Army, his family and his church came first. He was a very loving and supportive husband and father to June and his children, Tommy and Sherri. Never far from his side was John’s “sidekick”, his faithful dog Hugsey. John was a voracious reader, preferring military history novels and works by Tom Clancy, John Grisham, and David Baldacci. John’s idea of a great meal was hot dogs, chips, fluff, and Texas sheet cake, which became the meal of choice for family get-togethers.

Though he will be greatly missed, do not be saddened by John’s passing, for he had been looking forward to the day when he would finally be reunited with his beloved Junie.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years June Porter. He is survived by son Tom Porter and wife Sheri of Mustang, Oklahoma; daughter Sherri Dorman and husband John of Norman, Oklahoma; grandchildren Brittainy Vance of Edmond, Oklahoma, Brandon Porter of Oklahoma City, Danny Dorman and fiancée Katie Reddick of Norman, Spencer Dorman of Norman, and Allie Porter and fiancé Percy Kittler of San Antonio, Texas; and great-grandchildren Haile and Tré Vance.

Contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/donate).

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 1st at Peace Lutheran Church in Edmond (2600 E Danforth Rd).
