Joanna Burns Compton, 88, was born on May 8, 1931 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Edra & Jay Crisp. She passed away in Norman on March 8, 2020.
Joanna has been a resident of Norman since 1976. She taught for the Norman Public School system for 27 years. She also volunteered for the Norman Regional Hospital for 22 years. Joanna loved children – she enjoyed teaching and she loved playing UNO and baseball with her grandchildren. She was a very active person who liked to walk her “miles” every day. She baked often for family & friends. She baked sweet treats for her former colleague’s birthdays and during Christmas and other holidays. She was especially known for brownies, which everyone loved.
Survivors include her husband John Compton, of the home; son David Burns & his wife Mae of Granbury, Texas; daughter Lisa Pearson & her husband Jeff of Fort Myers, Florida; brother Paul Crisp of Ardmore, Oklahoma; sister Jayda Sue Riley of Chickasha, Oklahoma; grandchildren Mae Elizabeth Burns of Washington D.C.; Kathleen Marie Burns of Granbury, Texas; Brandon Jay Foss of Fort Myers, Florida; Jenna Leigh Foss of Fort Myers, Florida; & Alyssa Ann Pearson of Fort Myers, Florida. Joanna was preceded in death by her parents, Edra & Jay Crisp.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, March 13 at 10am, Bethel Baptist Church, 1717 W. Lindsey Street, Norman, OK 73069. Services are under the direction of Tribute Memorial Care, and condolences may be shared with the family at www.tribute.care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made under Joanna Compton’s name to either the Jesus House, P.O. Box 60369, Oklahoma City, OK 73146 or the St. Labre Indian School, P.O. Box 215, Ashland, MT 59004.
