James Michael “Mike” Sheppard of Norman, OK, 66, died on Monday, July 24, 2017. Mike was born November 13, 1950, in Lubbock, TX, to James “Jim” C. and Hazel J. “Jerry” Sheppard. After graduating from Duncan High School, Mike attended Oklahoma State University before entering the United States Army. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood and was stationed at Fort Hood.
Mike’s independent spirit and interest in construction led him to work primarily as a carpenter, welder, and concrete finisher. He also worked in the oil field with his father’s drilling company. Never one to know a stranger, Mike’s compassionate heart cared often more for others than for himself. He was always ready to lend a hand or listening ear for family, friend, or passing acquaintance. With his quick wit and vast memory, he could interject a perfectly timed joke or one-liner to fit any situation. Mike spent much of the last fifteen years providing support and day-to-day care for his parents and sister, Lisa. He donated regularly to numerous charitable organizations, especially those involving veterans.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Tina Blackburn and Lisa Sheppard. He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Jeanne and John Parrott of Noble, Pat and Sheryl Sheppard of Kingfisher, Joe Blackburn of Norman, Sterling and Susan Price of The Colony, TX, and Sue and Larry Sherwood of Horseshoe Bay, TX; 13 nieces and nephews; and 14 great-nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s honor to one of the many organizations whose mission is to serve and support military veterans.
Services for Mike will be scheduled at a later date.
