Ila Mae “Terry” Long passed away Oct 13, 2018 at the age of 90. She was born to Roy and Della (Shortes) Terrell in Foster, Oklahoma on September 18, 1928. She graduated from Graham High School and moved to Ardmore where she began working as a secretary. One of her co-workers decided that the name Ila Mae didn’t fit her, so she became Terry Terrell. She married Burl Thomas “Tom” Long, Jr. on October 10, 1952. Tom and Terry loved and supported each other until he passed away in 1988.
Terry was very involved in PTA when her children, Steve and Sharon, were young. She earned her Lifetime Membership to PTA as President of Albert Pike Elementary School PTA in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
After the family moved to Norman in 1965, she worked as a secretary for the Oklahoma Economic Development Foundation and Monroe Elementary School, and later volunteered in the office at McFarlin United Methodist Church until she was 79. She was highly respected for her professionalism and friendliness and she always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone.
Terry is survived by: son Steve of Norman; daughter Sharon Wieland (Ken) of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren Laura Parrish (Michael) and Danny Wieland, both of Dallas; and great-grandson William Parrish. She also leaves her brother Walter Terrell (JoAnn) of Norman. Terry will also be missed by her nieces, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and older brother Billy Roy.
Terry's family will be present to receive friends in the funeral home’s downstairs event center from 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, October 16th. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, October 17th in the sanctuary of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church (419 S University Blvd, Norman). A private family graveside service will be held at Elmore City Cemetery.
