Helena “Mickey” Bertman passed away on December 7, 2017, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 95 years. A native New Yorker, Mickey was born on January 8, 1922 in Queens, New York. Mickey graduated nursing school at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. In the years that followed, she raised her family and their friends. In her spare time, she was a dedicated registered nurse, caring for children at Sagamore Children’s Center in Melville, New York until her retirement in 1984. After her retirement, Mickey moved to Oklahoma to be closer to her daughters and toiled to get her ducks in a row. Mickey’s family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Florine Ahrens, her long-time caregiver and friend, to Good Sheppard Hospice, and to all of the wonderful staff at Brookdale Senior Living in Norman, Oklahoma, for their devotion to her in the last years of her life.
Mickey is survived by: her six children: Helena Nevin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Gene (Terry) Bertman of Norman, Oklahoma, John (Linda) Bertman of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Kris (Leah) Bertman of Holtsville, New York, Dee (John) Ward of Norman, Oklahoma, and Noel (Amy) Bertman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; her fourteen grandchildren: Eugene (Heather) Bertman of Norman, Oklahoma, Erika Lee of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Christopher (Allison) Bertman of Kings Park, New York, Lucas (Monica) Nevin of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kathleen (Matthew) Ronin of Charleston, South Carolina, Maria (Kara) Ward of Moore, Oklahoma, Brian Bertman of Charlotte, North Carolina, Michael Ward of Norman, Oklahoma, Jamie Bertman of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Rachel Bertman of Stony Brook, New York, Madison Ward of Norman, Oklahoma, Alex Bertman of Boulder, Colorado, Jessica Bertman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Ryan Bertman of Stony Brook, New York; and 8 great-grandchildren.
A Prayer Vigil and Rosary celebrating Mickey’s life will be held at 7:00pm on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church (3939 W Tecumseh Rd, Norman, OK 73072), with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am on Monday, December 11, 2017 at St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church in Norman. Mickey will be interred in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
