Frank H. Cooper, M.D.

Frank Harry Cooper, M.D., of Norman, Oklahoma passed on November 19, 2019. He was born March 6, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Kansas and was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Pittar and Reba Agnes (Fink) Cooper and his brother, Jack A. Cooper. He is survived by his wife Joy; two daughters: Elizabeth Ann Greenwood and husband Tim of Cleveland, Oklahoma and Catherine M. Cooper of Norman; one son: Thomas A. Cooper and wife Beth of Norman; three grandchildren: Nissa R. Gunderson, Harry L. Cooper, and Audrey M. Cooper; one brother: James E. Cooper and wife Sandra; George Cooper; Stephanie Martin; and Dawn Barnes.

Frank spent his childhood in Pittsburg, Arcadia, Parsons, and, briefly, Wichita, Kansas. His family moved to Miami, Oklahoma when he was fifteen, where he graduated from Miami High School in 1947. He attended N.E.O. Junior College in Miami, Oklahoma for one year before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, earning his B.S. in Pharmacy with Honors in 1951. On May 17, 1953 Frank married his high school sweetheart, Joy Phillips. The couple moved to Norman to complete Frank’s pre-medicine requirements, after which he attended the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, graduating in June of 1958. After completing his internship and residency, Frank returned to Norman with Joy and their three small children. Frank practiced family medicine and urology in Norman, Grove, and Miami, retiring from medicine in 1996 to resume his pharmacy career, working part-time at Sooner Pharmacy in Norman, Oklahoma until March of 2015.

Frank was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. He was a past president of the Cleveland-McClain County Medical Society, a lifetime member of the American Urology Association, the Oklahoma State Medical Association, and the Cleveland County Pharmacy Association.

Frank was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed gardening, golfing, photography, painting, and fishing. He was a student of life and took any opportunity to learn, always reading and studying history, gardening, and medical/pharmacy books. In his later years he was dedicated to attending his men’s coffee group every morning at Rudy’s in Norman. However, his greatest pleasure was time spent with his family. Some of his fondest memories were taking his grandchildren to get snow cones after dinner and making family trips around the country. Frank will be remembered as a talented, intelligent, kind, and gentle man who made a difference in the lives of not only his family, but also in the lives of the many people he attended during his long professional career. He made the world a better place through his example and professional service. He was perpetually happy and could often be heard whistling an upbeat tune. To his wife, children, and grandchildren he leaves a legacy of love and caring for others, and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Frank’s family has entrusted his care to Tribute Memorial Care in Norman (405.292.4787). Services to celebrate Frank’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, December 6th at First Presbyterian Church of Norman (555 S. University Blvd).
