Floyd Caloway Dean, 88, of Norman, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, December 12, 2020 in Oklahoma City.
Floyd was born in Wood River, IL on May 14, 1932 and lived in the area until 2003. In retirement, he relocated to Colorado Springs, CO and Norman, OK to be near family. He made friends and became a part of every community where he lived.
His occupational career spanned from construction superintendent to high school teacher to community college administrator. He retired from Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL in 1997. His greatest impact was through his ministry at First Assembly of God Church in Wood River where he served as custodian, children’s church leader, youth leader, Sunday school teacher, worship leader, Board Member and Chairman of the Board for over 50 years. He started a Youth for Christ program at the high school where he taught, was a Rotarian, a member of Gideon’s International and considered it his mission to serve in any capacity that he could. He touched countless lives with his upbeat and encouraging attitude.
Floyd graduated from East Alton-Wood River Community High School in Wood River, IL and received Bachelors and Masters degrees from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO.
He is survived by his daughters, Christi Dean Moore and husband Francis of Norman, OK and Patrice Dean Lawson and husband Jon of Yorkville, IL; grandchildren Griffin Parks of Norman, OK, Olivia Lawson of Tampa, FL and David Lawson of Yorkville, IL. One sister survives, Georgia Lou (Dean) Smith and her husband Clifford, of Jacksonville, FL.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife and grade school sweetheart, Norma Lee (Gimmeson) Dean. She was his constant companion for 63 years. His parents, H. C. and Flossie (Kindle) Dean and sister Naomi Ruth (Dean) Reaves also preceded him in death.
There will be visitation from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, Tuesday, December 29th, Pitchford Funeral Home, 2555 Vaughn Rd., Wood River, IL. A graveside ceremony will follow at 11:00 a.m., Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, Bethalto, IL.
