Dorothy Freeman Strickland

Dorothy Freeman Strickland passed away May 14, 2023. Dorothy was born July 29, 1921 to Roger Lloyd and Mary Lessie Hames Freeman in a two-story house about 15 miles east of Norman in a little town called Little River, Oklahoma. The town no longer exists, the house is gone and now Dorothy is gone.

She graduated from Norman High School in 1939 and then attended Hills’ Business College in Oklahoma City. Upon graduation she worked at various places, including Secretary in the office of the President at the University of Oklahoma. She worked for the government in Tokyo, Japan and later in the Transportation office in Fort Sill, OK where she arranged travel for the military and their dependents all over the world. She married Julius Strickland from Rock Hill, LA on October 4, 1947 and they were married almost 65 years at the time of his death in 2012.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Norman. She was also a member of Norman Newcomer’s Club for several years. After she retired, she volunteered for the American Red Cross at Reynold’s Army Hospital in Fort Sill, OK. When they moved to Norman in 1994, she started volunteering at the Norman Regional Hospital where she has been volunteering since 1995. After Julius passed away, she moved to Silver Elm Estates where she enjoyed the activities there as well as the people. She also enjoyed exercise at the Norman Senior Center, sewing, knitting, playing bridge, dominoes, line dancing with the group at McFarlin Methodist Church where they often entertained at the various nursing homes and her volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius; son, Dennis Strickland; parents; four sisters; a brother; and a grandson.

She is survived by son, David; daughter-in-law, Nancy Strickland; grandchildren, Candace Jennings, Jennifer Crabb, Natale Strickland, Brent Strickland; great grandchildren, Blake Strickland, Audrey Strickland, Maddie Crabb, Karlie Crabb, Jacy Jennings, Paige Jennings; and brother, Ed Freeman.

Memorials may be made in memory of Dorothy to the First Christian Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice.
