Cherrye Michael Stewart, age 78, went to be with her beloved Lord on March 5, 2017, at Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue, Washington, after undergoing emergency open heart surgery.
Cherrye began her life in Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma, where she had a happy childhood with many fond memories. In her teens, she was an excellent roller skater, dancer and swimmer whose vivacious and sweet personality made her popular with gals and guys alike, resulting in her receiving more than one marriage proposal!
In 1956, Cherrye graduated from high school in Washington D.C. and went to work for the phone company. A few months later, she married Ralph Davis, who had joined the Air Force to become a pilot. For the next twenty years, her life was filled with the duties of being an officer’s wife, mother of three children and moving every few months based on military orders, which included oversea stints in England and Taiwan. During those busy years, Cherrye persisted in taking college courses and in 1981, she proudly earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, the same year her youngest daughter graduated from high school!
In 1987, a single woman again, she moved to Barrow, Alaska, where she worked as an Administrator in education. After Barrow, Cherrye lived in Washington and Florida before moving to Maui, Hawaii to live near family. All her life, Cherrye was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who poured love into her children and grandchildren. She also served as a Red Cross volunteer, was a Water Safety Instructor, performed on a synchronized swimming team and was active in various church ministries.
In addition to being an avid reader, Cherrye enjoyed attending the symphony, ballet and theater. True to her southern roots, she savored hush puppies, fried okra, lima beans and sweet tea. Cherrye loved the ocean and would walk for miles on the beach. She was an accomplished gardener who grew beautiful flowers but nothing gave her more pleasure than spending time with family and friends.
Cherrye will be remembered for her intelligence, patience, wisdom and wonderful sense of humor! She was quick to smile and loved to laugh and have fun. She was a great listener who truly cared about others and her kindness touched everyone she met.
Cherrye is survived by her three children; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her older brother Gene; numerous nieces and nephews (and their children); and a plethora of friends.
On April 1, 2017, at noon, family and friends of Cherrye will gather to Celebrate her life and lay her ashes to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood.
