Billy Floyd Sprayberry, 81, of Moore, Oklahoma, passed away on November 27 in Norman, Oklahoma.
Bill was born on October 29, 1943, in South Pittsburg, Tennessee and grew up in the small farming community of Delta, Alabama. He attended Delta School through Grade 8 and then attended Lineville High School where he was a varsity letterman on the Lineville Aggie Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams before joining the United States Air Force in July of 1960.
Bill honorably and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 29 years before retiring in 1989. During his time in the military, he achieved the highest rank of Chief Master Sergeant and served in Miyako-Jima in Okinawa, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Korea, Great Britain, and many other undisclosed locations in the United States and around the world.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Yun Ok Sprayberry, his parents John Floyd and Katherine Love Sprayberry, granddaughter Jessica Sprayberry, and fellow Alabama football fan, nephew Jason “Big J” Hendrix.
He is survived by two brothers; Ron Sprayberry and wife Mary Lynn of Alexander City, Alabama and Paul Sprayberry and wife Suzanne of Surprise, Arizona, three sisters; Barbara Palmer and husband Benny of Valley Head, Alabama, Carol Hendrix and husband Garry of Oxford, Alabama, and Kathy Sutter also of Oxford, Alabama.
He is also survived by three sons; Billy Sprayberry and wife Rhonda of Roland, Oklahoma, Greg Sprayberry and wife Stacey of Moore, Oklahoma, and Kevin Sprayberry also of Moore; six grandchildren; Caleb Sprayberry, Brady Sprayberry and wife Maci, Evan Sprayberry and wife Taylor, Will Sprayberry and wife Haven, Jackson Sprayberry, and Erin Gude. In addition, there are six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Bill had a tremendous love for family and the United States of America. After retirement, he moved to Moore, OK so he could spend more time with his family, and especially his grandsons. He looked forward to attending their multiple football, basketball, and baseball games, and he became fondly known as “Pops” to all. Bill had great relationships with many nieces and nephews, and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and enjoyed watching PGA Golf. He lived an exciting life, and we all loved hearing his stories of adventure.
The family invites everyone to visit and celebrate the life of Bill “Pops” Sprayberry on Sunday, December 1 from 3:00-5:00pm at Tribute Memorial Care, 4300 W. Indian Hills Rd., Norman, OK. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at 2:00pm on Monday, December 2 at Ft. Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.
To honor Bill's life, he kindly requested donations be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America and/or Vietnam Veterans of America.
