AC McHughes of Norman, Oklahoma passed away Friday, February 4, in Norman at the age of 92. AC was born July 25, 1929, in Purcell, OK to John Ervin and Willis McGhee McHughes. The family moved to Norman in 1942 where he met his future wife Bobbie DeArman on a blind date. They were married May 6, 1951 at McFarlin Methodist Church.
AC was a member of the Oklahoma Air National Guard and was called to active duty with the United States Air Force in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He was sent to Cook & Baker’s School, Camp Rucker, Alabama where he graduated top in his class. After his discharge he returned to Norman and purchased the McHughes Food Center grocery on North Flood Street in 1953. He and his wife operated the store for 28 years. Not being able to sit still he and Bobbie purchased a food truck and traveled to festivals all over the state serving his signature Reuben Sandwiches. After retirement from the grocery business and food truck he continued to work for his brother and nephews at Sooner Dairy Lunch.
AC was a loving, caring and generous man who was always willing to help his family, neighbors and friends. And those who knew him will tell you that he always had a funny story to tell.
