Judy was born on April 15, 1944 in Wewoka, OK to Dick Griffin and Alice Jewell (Gist) Griffin. She grew up on the family farm near Konawa, OK and graduated from Vamoosa High School in 1962. She attended Oklahoma State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Relations & Child Development in 1966.

In November of 1962, Judy met Gene McKown of Dickson, OK on a train to Chicago, Illinois for National 4-H Club Congress. They dated for two years and were married on November 21, 1964 at the Konawa Church of Christ. On November 21, 2014, they celebrated 50 years of marriage. They are the parents of two sons, Vernon and Richard.

After graduating from OSU they moved to Norman and began a career in real estate. Judy worked alongside her husband at Red Carpet Realty and Better Homes & Gardens.

For ten years Judy was a local 4-H club leader, Cleveland County 4-H Teen Leaders volunteer, and she also served as President of the Oklahoma 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association. She was named a Cleveland County Honorary 4-H Member and Cleveland County Friend of 4-H. In 2000 Gene and Judy received the Oklahoma 4-H Alumni Recognition Award

Judy was a Reach to Recovery volunteer and in 2011 she and two other women founded the American Cancer Society Survivor Resource Center at Norman Regional Hospital. It was Judy’s honor to make cancer patients feel beautiful again.
